Beauty Review: Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink

Hooray! It’s everyone’s favorite time – Beauty Review time! Today I am reviewing Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink lipstick.

I went into Wal-Mart for TWO THINGS and lipstick was not one of them! I loved the pretty colors and haven’t purchased a lipstick in a while so I went for it.

This Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink is in shade 115 Founder. It’s a gorgeous shade, perfect for fall! So my first impressions – the applicator is weird. It has an indent in the middle of the sponge. And the sponge isn’t very spongey if that makes sense! I DO however like the pointed tip (just the tip!). It makes lining the lips much easier.
The lip product goes on pretty smooth and you don’t need a lot of it to get a good full coverage on your lips. Immediately after applying, the product is super sticky. Not lip gloss sticky, but like I just put glue on my lips sticky. I expected that to go away within a few minutes, but nope, no such luck. The stickiness lasted for several hours. Every time I opened my mouth to talk, I was paused a second while my lips unglued themselves from each other.
This lipstick lasts a LONG time. I drank coffee, water and even went to work out and it stayed. Most lip products claiming super stay don’t make it past 11 am, but I am happy to report this one did last. I put a second application on after lunchtime, but I definitely didn’t need to.
The Bottom Line: I love the color, love the staying power, but just can’t get over the stickiness of this. I probably won’t return it just because it’s too much effort, but I don’t think I will be wearing this again.

Anxiety

The “A” Word

I promised you a very personal post. It’s a story I think deserves to be shared so people know they are not alone. So, here I am, now ready to rip open my chest and let you see inside what it’s like to live life with anxiety and depression.

On the outside, I look like I have my shit together. 30-something, fit, attractive, good career, happy marriage, close circle of friends–but on the inside you see a disaster. I like to think of my “inside” looking a lot like an episode of hoarders–you know the before shots? Where everything is one giant hot mess and it’s hard to look at? Yep, that’s how I have felt a lot of my life.

For most of my life, I have been ashamed of my anxiety and didn’t want to broadcast to the world what I was dealing with. And then I had my anxiety managed pretty well–until I decided I no longer needed 120mg of Cymbalta a day–then shit fell apart. I read harrowing stories every day about the struggles people are facing with anxiety and depression and I get it. I don’t want them to feel ashamed and afraid like I have for most of my life–so I will take my passion of writing to help them know they aren’t alone.

SO a little background on me–I promise I won’t bore you with all the minute details since you probably have a story very similar. I have always had anxiety and depression, but as a kid had NO idea what was wrong with me. Just that I was different and couldn’t name what my issues were so figured I was some sort of psychopath. Fast forward to my sophomore year of college where several family illnesses and a death sent me on a downward spiral of panic, depression, failing grades and an addiction to Xanax. Fast forward a bit more, through the years of trying medication after medication–a huge move out of state, followed by a bitter divorce, then sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns until BAM December 2017.  I thought I had anxiety and depression beat, so I ever so carefully wean myself off my meds and GUESS WHAT? Yep–you know the story–I am back at square one.

I hate rides and theme parks, but from December 2017-June 2018 I was riding a roller coaster of panic, anxiety, guilt, shame, depression and all the ugliness that goes with it. Since June, I am back on medication and am happy to say that I am about 90% anxiety free. It’s not exactly what I wanted. I really wanted to stop with the medications, but apparently, I really need it.

So, yep, that’s my story. I stitched myself together with chewing gum, Duct tape and more than a few clumps of dog and cat fur (sorry I have animals and shit always gets stuck to the tape). But I am slowly starting to again heal.

Please know that you AREN’T alone. I get it. Although my days of anxiety and depression are now few and far between, it’s always there, like a rain cloud, following me wherever. I go.

Changes

I’m Back Bi*ches!

Fall is a time of change. The leaves are changing colors, the clocks are changing backward (or is it forwards? I never remember), and the weather is changing. With all that change happening, I have decided to do some changing too. My love for writing has been waylaid by life. I always have the best intentions, but (insert a million excuses here), I have given myself a swift kick in the ass, and I am back at it!

I will still bring my readers the best of beauty reviews and my take on products (since you know I love a good beauty product), but I am also going to address topics in the news, self-care, mental health and more personal topics that I think are important.
Why all the change? I am glad you asked! Writing is my passion. I live to write, but for the last few years, my writing has been put on the back burner. After reading Girl Wash Your FaceI have decided to stop doing things that I don’t love and only do the things I really love. Sounds like duh, of course, but think about it. How many things are you doing that don’t bring you joy? I bet more than you think.
So this is my welcome back post. My next post I will be tackling a very personal topic and something that I have struggled with for years. Look for that later in the week.

Younique Eye Pigments

Younique Sassy 2I am loving on Moodstruck Minerals Pigment Powder by Younique.  These pigments are gorgeous and long-lasting. I have several shades that I have been trying, but right now I am in love with Sassy, which is a pinkish color. I never thought pink eye shadow looked good, but I love it!

Younique is a newer company that is selling products that are chemical free. Their eye pigments contain: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, Bismuth Oxychloride Carmine, and Zinc Oxide. Basically all natural occurring minerals. The container that the moodstruck minerals pigment powder comes in reminds me of bare minerals. You shake a little bit of the pigment powder in the cap and brush it on. I am pretty sure this eyeshadow will last me forever! I barely have to use any to get a completely full-coverage look.

The moodstruck minerals comes in a ton of shades from very dark to very bright! At $10 a shade, I don’t think you can go wrong!

If you are interested in learning more about Younique and their products, contact Heather Jadus, she is a consultant with Younique.

I give props to Younique for being natural and having a great product at great prices!! Two paws up!

The C Word

My mom, sister and I
My mom, sister and I

In lieu of my usual beauty product review I am going to get a little personal. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer less than a week ago. Since that time, our whole family has had up and downs with the emotions. Tonight is definitely an up.

After meeting with her dr. the news is wonderful! The cancer is barely measurable in her breast and has not spread anywhere. A simple lumpectomy and radiation should do the trick. Of course it is a bit more complicated than that, but it is wonderful news! My mom will have the summer full of appointments and radiation, but the upside is she won’t miss work as she is a teacher.

This is a huge wake-up call for me.  I don’t do self exams and I think that cancer is never going to happen to me or my family, but it can and it does. So be vigilant, check yourself, go to the doctor and be healthy!

I would welcome your experiences and thoughts about breast cancer.

Friday’s post will be back to the norm! I will be reviewing Younique’s eyeshadows

Derma E Micodermabrasion Scrub

2013070315162697967_medThis month’s glam bag came chock full of moisturizers and other facial scrubs and peels. Although I use a scrub once a week or so on my face, I have never used a microdermabrasion. I was excited to try Derma E Micodermabrashion Scrub.  I went online to learn more about the company and product since it was a new name to me. Imagine my surprise when I learned this company only used natural ingredients in their products! I always love chemically-free products! Kudos Derma E.

So this microdermabrasion scrub is loaded with great ingredients including sea salt, lime and lemon peel and Vitamin E.  I used a small amount to start and that’s all I really needed to scrub my whole face.  It’s definitely a strong scrub! I was a little concerned that this would irritate my sensitive rosacea skin, but it just made me a little red, nothing more. I scrubbed very gently for a minute per the instructions. My face felt awesome! I do scrub once or twice a week, but my scrubs are nothing like Derma E’s scrub. On Derma E’s website they also mention you can use this scrub for rough areas on your body. I will definitely be trying that! The price point for the scrub is pretty decent compared to other products out there.

I will definitely continue to use the sample that came in my May Glam Bag. I probably wouldn’t spend the money on the microdermabrasion scrub only because I would prefer to spend my money on makeup products.

Derma E’s Microdermabrasion Scrub gets two paws up!

Moodstruck Glorious Face & Eye Primer

In my quest to undestand primers, I have once again given a primer a try, this time I tried Younique’s Moodstruck Glorious Face & Eye Primer.  This primer is part of Younique’s line of products that are chemical-free.  The primer is very silky and goes on easy, but you all know how I feel about primer. I just don’t think it does anything!

I have been using it for about a week, but haven’t noticed anything.  The primer doesn’t cause any negative issues, but I am convinced the primer is just a gimmick.  So today I put primer on half my face and took a pic right after my makeup was applied. Then after a full 8+ hour day, I took another picture. (its scary, sorry). I wanted to see if there were any differences at all in the side with primer and the side without. I felt this was really the only way to truly find out if this primer is all that it’s cracked up to be.

See the pictures for yourself and you be the judge. I wore the primer on my left side. In my after pictures I definitely notice more of a shine to that side of the face and it definitely feels greasier than the side without primer. But other than that, I don’t notice anything.

after makeup end of day

This primer is two paws down!

My Favorite Things – Vaseline

vaseline-450x450_tcm72-298021Vaseline is a pretty versatile beauty product. Similar to coconut oil, it has a myriad of uses in your bathroom. It is cheap, easy-to-find, and is non-toxic.  It is super thick and super moisturizing making it great for thick, dry areas like your elbows and heels. Here are some other ways to incorporate vaseline into your beauty routine:

  1. Put it on your eyelashes at night to make them more lush
  2. Use vaseline as a make-up remover
  3. Soften cuticles by rubbing vaseline into them
  4. Lip balm
  5. Slather it on your face during the winter to get soft, supple skin

How do you use vaseline? Let me know how you incorporate this versatile beauty product in your routine!

Younique 3D Fiber Lashes

After a brief break I am back to bring you awesome reviews on the latest make-up and beauty products. You can expect to hear from me Wednesdays and Fridays! As always, feel free to email me questions or to request my trying out a product.

Lashes are like the stilettos of your face. They top your look off enhancing your features and drawing attention to your eyes. Most of us, me included, are not blessed with long, lush lashes (although so many guys are, shame). So to make our lashes pop we either experiment with hundreds of different mascaras or try fake eyelashes. I LOVE fake eyelashes. You can do so many different looks with them and they just make you feel sultry, but putting them on can be a process. It’s a 50/50 shot whether I am going to get it on or stuck to my face!

Enter, Younique. A newcomer to the makeup market boasting a line of mineral products that don’t contain harsh ingredients. They also carry Younique 3D Fiber Lashes. These fiber lashes are the bomb! Simply apply a light coat of your favorite mascara then Younique’s transplanting gel followed by the fiber lashes. Bam! You have sultry, lush lashes in seconds.

The pic is of my friend using Younique on her left lashes and regular mascara on her right. I apparently have not yet mastered a mascara selfie 🙂 Younique

I love these lashes and think they are great. I don’t use them on a day-to-day basis but for going out I skip the falsies and go straight to these.

Let me know if you have used these and what your thoughts are. I also have some other products from Younique that I will review as well.

I am giving Younique’s 3D Fiber Lashes 2 paws up!
