Rosacea – A Not So Rosy Story

Me on a good rosacea day

Me on a good rosacea day

I’d like to get a little personal today and tell you all about my journey with rosacea. It has been a long, annoying, and at times depressing road; but I feel that lately my rosacea is under control.

For those of you who don’t know, rosacea is an incurable skin condition that makes your face flush and most times the flushing remains permanent.  Rosacea can also affect your nose making it very ruddy and bulbous and rosacea can even affect your eyes.  My rosacea is mainly across my cheeks, nose, and a tiny spot on my forehead.  Most who suffer from rosacea have extremely sensitive skin, I certainly do!

For many, many years, I have struggled with rosacea. At first I didn’t even know it was a “thing”, I was always flushed and if I worked out it was 10 times worse and lasted a long time.  I have had probably a dozen dermatologists.  Many have told me they have “done all they could do” in treating my rosacea.  For me that was not an option. Rosacea sufferers know that there is not a “one-size fits all” solution to this problem. So I’ve tried everything. Just for fun here is a list of some of the things I have tried:

  • Baby aspirin in the AM
  • Visine on the redness
  • Countless herbal solutions
  • Very expensive french products
  • Ice cubes
  • Bare Minerals
  • And about 100 other things!

Last year, I just couldn’t take it anymore and went and got IPL Laser treatments. I was really amazed at the progress I saw! I definitely still had some redness (its permanent and not going anywhere) but I could actually see a huge change! I was so happy.  The laser treatments are something I will have to continue as the redness comes back, but it was a start onto a good road for me.

My current routine for my skin is as follows:

  • Use Finacea in the AM and Simple Moisturizer
  • I use Make Up Forever HD foundation – it doesn’t bother my skin one bit
  • In the PM I use a makeup wipe and then clean with a gel cleanser from Sephora
  • I reapply the finacea and then (gasps of horror) use Retinol cream

I have my rosacea managed pretty well right now, but it comes in spurts and I expect it will get out of control again.

I would love to have a great conversation going about rosacea. I want to hear about the products you use and the crazy things you have tried.
